Our feet have been wrapped up in the warmth of wooly socks for the winter months and now spring beckons our twinkly toes and sassy soles to come out and tip toe through the tulips. Our feet are amazing, did you know that:
- 1/4 of all the bones in the human body are in the feet.
- During a lifetime the average person will walk more than 250,000 miles or the distance from the Earth to the moon.
- The average foot gets two sizes longer when standing up.
- A 2 ½ inch heel may increase the load on the forefoot by 75%.
- Foot problems occur in women four times more than in men (could it be the heels, ladies?).
- The average foot expands about five percent in volume as the day goes on.
These facts and more can be found at the Stop Foot Pain site.
Paying some podiatric attention to those feet is always in order. If no one is around (or willing) to give you a foot massage, give yourself one with this easy to follow along video. Follow this with a relaxing foot soak (10 or 20 minutes); I recommend warm water mixed with Epsom salts and peppermint essential oil, try this offering from Dr. Teal.
According to reflexology, each part of the foot corresponds to various organs and parts of the body, so paying attention to your feet is also paying attention to your whole body! There are a number of easy to use reflexology tools available on the market. One amazing offering is the Stirling Reflex Roller. Mildred Carter, a bestselling author of reflexology books, champions this particular roller and it’s devotees swear by its consistent use for youth and vigor.
Of course, if you are going to be on your feet for the better part of the day a bit of forethought and preparation is a good idea. Consider purchasing comforting insoles, which can be a savoir to those busy soles. Check out these sites for ideas; Happy Feet, Dr. Scholl’s, and FootSmart.
If the average person does in fact walk 250,000 steps in a lifetime, an investment in happy and healthy feet is a foot-tastic idea. Keep those feet in step and you’ll be tip toeing through the tulips, waltzing with the wind and joyfully jogging for years to come!
